YABATECH BEGINS HOSTEL ALLOCATION TO STUDENTS

The management of Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) has began the sale of hostel form one month after resumption. The form costs N600. The students have also complained of being chased out of the classrooms where they sleep at night.

ENCOMIUM Weekly visited Yabatech on Friday, July 11, 2015. A student who pleaded anonymity revealed that the school authorities have taken sudden action by constantly chasing students out of the classroom.

“I go home every Friday and come back on Monday morning. I live at Shagamu and I can’t afford to transport myself daily, moreover it will be too stressful, so I sleep in the school chapel because it’s safer there. I hope I will get accommodation. Some of my friends have put funds together to get an apartment off campus.

Another student said “I also sleep in the school chapel, we wake up as early as 3 am to bath because the morning devotion will take place at 5am in the chapel, so we have to be dressed before then. I leave in Ikorodu, it was after the school authority heard that a magazine reported the news, that was when they took action. They started selling the hostel form the following day and now the first list of students who will be accommodated is out”. We also gathered that the first list of students who were given accommodation was released June 9, 2015. All efforts to speak to the school management on this issue proved abortive when we visited the school.

We also tried to speak to the Public Relations Officer but he didn’t pick our call. We further sent a text which reads “Good day sir, I am Nkechi Ibemere, I write for ENCOMIUM Weekly. I have been trying to reach you but you never answered my call. We want to know why the students’ hostels have not been opened and if the management of Yabatech is aware that their students sleep in classrooms. We would like to hear from you as soon as possible. Thanks”.

We didn’t receive reply before we went to press.
