The veteran duo of Nnamani Chimaobi John also known as Johnel and Nnamani Grace Odi have taken their expertise and passion for the music industry to new heights with the creation of Nnamani Music Group (NMG). This independent label, under the umbrella of ONErpm Distribution, is set to revolutionize the way that independent African and international rights holders are supported in the music industry.

This multi-tiered label promises to support artists and producers who are forging new paths in the music industry, providing them with the essential resources, guidance, and infrastructure to successfully navigate the ever-changing landscape. The creation of NMG represents a shift towards a more holistic approach to artist development, one that recognizes the unique needs and challenges faced by independent rights holders in today’s music industry, signing in artists like Daine Steele, Gusty Guy and working with a lot more.

Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Johnel has been forging new paths in the music industry since his entry in 2022, releasing multiple extended plays through ONE Revolution People’s Music (ONErpm) to widespread acclaim.

It was not until 2024, in partnership with ONErpm Distribution, that NMG was officially launched, with Johnel’s sister Nnamani Grace Odinakachukwu stepping in as a co-founder. As an artist himself, he signed with Nnamani Music Publishings and achieved impressive milestones, amassing over 100,000 streams globally through ONErpm distribution. OVER THE LAST YEAR, HAS THERE BEEN A TIME WHEN YOU’VE BEEN UP AT NIGHT WORRYING THAT IT’S ALL GOING WRONG?
“There are anxious moments for sure but I honestly just have hope and know that everything will go as planned. I mean… What are we here for? We want to help and support people from different parts of the world, it takes confidence and faith to start up something like that. If I didn’t have the confidence, NMG wouldn’t exist.”
ALL OF US WORKING IN MUSIC LIKE TO TELL OURSELVES IT’S SPECIAL, LIKE NO OTHER INDUSTRY ON EARTH. BUT YOU’VE WORKED IN EVERYTHING FROM POST-PRODUCTION TO WRITING. IS MUSIC REALLY ALL THAT DIFFERENT?
Just two words: Business and Music. It’s an interesting comparison, but it’s also quite difficult.
Nothing like the music portion. People are the most important thing, not goods. Through the use of sound, moving stories are told that transform lives.
HAVE YOU MADE ANY MISTAKES THAT YOU THOUGHT WERE DAMAGING BUT THAT HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE BENEFICIAL?
Good question. Like every human being, I have made a lot of mistakes, but I’m a big believer in not bothering yourself about it too much.
WHICH ARE THE ARTISTS YOU’VE MOST ENJOYED MEETING?
Well, I can’t really say, different experiences with different artists. I enjoy my time with most of those I’ve met.
WHAT’S YOUR OWN PLAN FOR THE FUTURE?
It changes overtime. But if I’m to put it in one word, it’ll be “
LAST QUESTION: ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR PEOPLE JUST STARTING OUT IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS?
Working as a team is key. It is necessary to listen more than you speak. Put yourself in other people’s situations as much as possible. Develop your capacity for empathy.
All of this can be summed up in four words: cooperation and communication. Collaboration and coordination. That’s what makes a culture truly creative.
