The Lagos chapter of the University of Calabar Alumni Association recently gathered at Oriental Hotel, Lagos to hold the inaugural edition of its Legacy Summit. The first-of-its-kind event was aimed at bringing together alumni members to discuss ways in which they can collectively make impact in their alma mater and the society at large.
The event, sponsored by MTN Nigeria, saw the attendance of over 100 alumni members from different sets, come together to network, reconnect and share knowledge on diverse issues.
In his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar, Professor Florence Banku Obi, represented by Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies, University of Calabar, Professor Eyong Ubana Eyong applauded the association for its commitment to fostering unity and seeking the progress of the university, assuring them of success. The alumni were encouraged to make valuable contributions towards the growth of their alma mater.
Speaking on the theme “Uniting Generations, Inspiring the Future”, Vice Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Abiodun Adebayo spoke on the need to bridge the divide between diverse generations of people, citing a seeming disconnect between the older and younger generations.
Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, also an alumnus of the University of Calabar, urged the older generations to share their inspiring stories, mentor and build communication with the younger ones, in ways that are bound to lead to positive transformation. “By inspiring and empowering future generations, we can leave an enduring legacy that will impact our alma matter, the alumni association and the world for years”.
In an insightful panel discussion on “Creating an Age-inclusive Future”, Director of Research and Studies, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Professor Efem Ubi engaged with notable executives, including Head, Chevron Nigeria Limited Hospital, Dr. Theresa Ekwere; Executive Director, Lekki Gardens, Dr. Christie Amida and Port Manager, Lagos Port Complex, Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr Charles Okaga. The esteemed panelists shared experiences from their various works of life, as they gave valuable insights on impactful leadership and fostering unity across generations. They all agreed that all generations can learn from each other and inspiring a great future would require putting aside personal bias, understanding each generation’s unique perspective on key issues and becoming allies.
The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia as the alumni reminisced on shared memories from their time at the university, celebrating how far they have come. Attendees also took out time to remember fellow alumnus who have since passed on, recognizing their noteworthy contributions to the Association during their lifetime. Awards were presented to notable members of the UNICAL Alumni Association (Lagos Chapter) who have made valuable efforts in moving the association forward, including Manager, Go-To-Market at MTN Nigeria, Joseph Ogbuka.
