MTN-Backed University Duel Celebrate STEM Excellence as UNN and OAU Dominate

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) secured third place on Sunday, 19 April 2026 at TenOone Studios, Lagos, after a remarkable comeback against the University of Ibadan at the second edition of the University Duel. The MTN-backed tournament, featuring 62 tertiary institutions, fosters STEM excellence to equip Nigerian undergraduates with critical technical skills for a digital-first economy.

The bronze-medal match saw UNN Computer Science students Solomon Adzape, Emma Enemuo, and Godswill Ochi, deliver standout performances, as they utilised lightning-fast buzzer plays to overcome an early deficit. This high-stakes playoff set the stage for the Grand Finale, between Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and Federal University of Technology Akure. After a 30-minute battle, OAU triumphed.

With Nigeria’s digital economy requiring specialised talent, industry stakeholders emphasised that early technical exposure is non-negotiable for national growth. Supporting this vision, Moyosola Omoniyi, Campaign Management Digital Manager, MTN Nigeria said, “focusing students in STEM is both our present and future. As Nigeria gets more technologically advanced, we need our students to be equipped to lead the way.”

The 11-week tournament, which evolved from a decade-long secondary school format, has become a vital talent pipeline for the country. Reflecting on the intellectual agility displayed throughout the season, Olufemi Oyenuga, CEO Chams Corporation plc said, “We have seen a display out of this world; OAU showed massive depth in STEM with an intensity that secured their victory in the final quarters.”

Beyond the immediate glory for OAU’s Alli Abdul-Quayum and his teammates, the 2026 season reflected a broader national shift toward technological self-sufficiency. By engaging 186 students from 62 schools, the Duel prepares the next generation of web developers and system architects to lead Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape.
