MTN Foundation, MUSON Expand Nigeria’s Music Talent Pipeline with New Graduates

The MTN Foundation has celebrated two decades of transforming music education in Nigeria as it commemorated the 20th anniversary of its partnership with the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON). The milestone was marked by the graduation of 39 scholars from the 19th cohort of the MUSON School of Music Diploma Programme during a convocation ceremony held on July 7 and 8 at the Shell Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos.

The graduating scholars, who completed the two-year programme on full scholarships provided by the MTN Foundation, were formally recognised during the event, which also featured performances showcasing the skills and training acquired during their studies.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Chairman of the MTN Nigeria Foundation, Dr. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, said the creative industry is far more than a platform for artistic expression. “It is a powerful engine for cultural identity, social cohesion, and robust economic growth,” she said.

The MUSON School of Music Diploma Programme offers a two-year conservatory-level education covering performance, music theory, and ensemble practice. Students specialise in one of 14 instruments including Piano, Violin, Cello, Flute, Saxophone, Voice and Percussion, while also participating in choir, orchestra and concert band activities designed to provide practical collaborative experience.

The graduation concert featured performances by the MUSON School Orchestra and the graduating scholars. During the event, MUSON Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Louis N. Mbanefo (SAN), announced the designation of Princess Banke Ademola as Director Emeritus, effective upon her retirement at the end of the academic year.

Mrs. Odunayo Sanya, Executive Director of the MTN Nigeria Foundation, presented the MTNF Awards to scholars who best exemplified the Foundation’s five core values: Michael Anieze (first prize), Ganiyu Ajakaye (second), and Dorcas Jimoh (third). The awards, presented alongside board members Dr. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, Mr. Emmanuel Ocholi and Sir Etim Amana, highlighted the Foundation’s continued strategic commitment to the programme.

Since 2006, the MTN Foundation has funded access to the programme through the MTNF-MUSON scholarship scheme, with every admitted student receiving support covering tuition, learning materials and transportation. To date, over 550 scholars have completed the programme.

Acting Director of the MUSON School of Music, Professor Emeka Nwokedi, said the intervention has helped remove major barriers to music education. “Talent exists everywhere, but access does not always exist. The support from MTN Foundation has given many young Nigerians the opportunity to focus on developing their abilities and pursuing professional careers in music,” he said. Alumni of the programme have gone on to pursue careers and further studies globally.
