MTN Nigeria is extending its network reach into rural communities through 43 Rural Link sites, improving access to digital services in areas where connectivity can support education, healthcare and local businesses. The deployment forms part of the company’s wider network expansion as more Nigerians rely on internet access for essential services, communication and economic activity.
The sites are part of MTN Nigeria’s activation of 154 new and upgraded network sites across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory between mid-August and early October 2026. The deployment comprises 59 new sites and 95 upgraded sites. Some of the Rural Link sites are located near health centres and primary schools in Ebonyi, Gombe and Kaduna states.
Commenting on the deployment, MTN Nigeria Chief Technical Officer, Yahaya Ibrahim, said connectivity is a critical enabler of social and economic participation across the country.
“Connectivity is an essential enabler of economic participation, learning and access to information. Through our Rural Link programme, we are extending network coverage to communities that have traditionally been underserved, helping to ensure that more people can benefit from the opportunities created by an increasingly digital society. As demand for digital services continues to grow, we remain focused on investing in infrastructure that enhances coverage, capacity and the overall customer experience,” he said.
Research published in the Journal of Development Economics in 2024 found that mobile broadband coverage in Nigeria increased household consumption by more than 10% and reduced poverty, with particularly strong effects among poorer households and rural communities. The study also linked expanded coverage to higher labour force participation, especially in wage employment, underscoring the broader economic and social benefits of connectivity.
Improved internet access can help students access learning materials and educational resources beyond the classroom, while also supporting the adoption of digital tools in schools. It can enable residents to communicate more easily with healthcare providers, access health information and make greater use of digital services.
Farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs also stand to benefit. Better connectivity can help them access market information, reach new customers, promote their products and use digital financial services. These opportunities can connect rural businesses to wider markets and create new pathways for growth.
As Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, extending network coverage beyond major urban centres remains important to broadening digital inclusion. MTN’s Rural Link deployment reflects the role telecommunications infrastructure can play in connecting underserved communities to opportunities in education, healthcare and commerce. As demand for digital services grows, investments in connectivity will remain an important enabler of economic participation and development.
