Amosun bags SDGs Leadership Action Award

The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has been presented with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Leadership Action Award by a coalition of Non Governmental Organisations, Centre for Convention on Democratic Integrity in Nigeria and the Right Monitoring Group.
The award, which was presented to the governor in his Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, office, according to the spokesman of the groups, Comrade Olufemi Aduwo, is in recognition of his contributions to goal 13, 16 and 17 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
According to him, they include Climate Change Issues, Peace and Justice as well as partnership between the private and public sector.
Aduwo also revealed that the NGO’s, which are third party monitoring group of the United States, have also nominated the governor for another award, in recognition of his efforts on climate change and environmental protection.
Responding, Amosun said his administration is irrevocably committed to the protection of the environment, adding that the commitment to the tenets of the SDGs will enhance good governance.
He noted that his administration has specifically created a special agency for Millennium Development Goals and later SDGs, as a mark of determination to the actualisation of the goals, adding that “we are embarking on continuous planting of trees as a way of preserving our environment.”
Lamenting that the nation does not take the issue of climate change serious, he warned of the dire consequences of it’s devastating effects.
The governor said that his government is already making efforts to orientate the younger generation, through an initiative powered by a pet project of his wife, the Green Empowerment For the Youth (GEFTY).
