…to be buried in Lagos
LATE Anthonio Dehinde Fernandez, the billionaire international businessman, diplomat and bureaucrat, who died on Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at exactly 6.05 p.m in a private hospital in Brussels, Belgium, had been in and out of hospital in the last five years treating what a close source said was a major health challenge.
A family source told us the late billionaire, in his usual charismatic boldness in confronting challenges, fought the ailment courageously but his old age did not help matters and so he eventually succumbed to the cold hands of death.
Thus, few weeks before his demise, he was said to have called some of his children one by one to his bedside. Few of his children who saw him few weeks before his demise were hopeful he would pull out of it as usual but when he was no longer audible in his conversation with them on the phone, they knew his time was near.
His time eventually came at exactly 6.05 p.m on Tuesday, September 1, 2015. He breathed his last in the presence of his wife, Halima Maude Fernandez, whom he married in 2003.
He was born in Lagos on August 12, 1929, to the famous Olumegbon royal family of Isale-Eko (where Oba Rilwan Akiolu, Olowo Eko of Eko is also from).
He is survived by nine children which include Chief (Mrs.) Olateju Phillips, the former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Lagos State. Chief (Mrs.) Teju Phillips’ mother is late Princess Ibilola Lipede, the younger sister of late Oba Folorunsho Lipede, Alake of Egbaland. Her mother was Ambassador Fernandez’s first wife.
Chief (Mrs.) Teju Phillips is followed by Gbemi Fernandez and Anthony Fernandez, who are children of his late wife, Mrs. Folashade Bankole.
Akin Fernandez, Titi Fernandez and Koye Fernandez are Ambassador Dehinde’s children from his white American wife, Barbara Joyce Fernandez, who divorced him in 1987, after 25 years of marriage. She too died in 2013.
Antoinette Oyinkansola Fernandez is his child from Erelu Abiola Dosunmu, another of his wife.
Atinuke Fernandez and Abimbola Fernandez are his children from late Mrs. Aduke Olufunmilayo Fernandez, who divorced him in July 2003 and also died in 2013.
