Eight feared dead in historic US snowstorm in New York

A ‘historic’ storm dropped more than five feet of snow in northeast United States of America (USA), leaving scores stranded and at least eight dead, officials have said.

A state of emergency, as well as travel plans have been declared in Buffalo’s Erie County (New York) after 1.8m of snow swept into the city from across Lake Erie.

The county’s spokesman, Peter Anderson said runways at Buffalo Niagara International Airport were open, but that “a lot of flights” were being cancelled because people cannot get to the airport.
