‘I appreciate government’s honour but I need a better job’-Josephine Ugwu

The airport cleaner that refunded 12 million equivalent of foreign currencies has expressed her appreciation to the federal government for honouring her honesty and patriotism.

Speaking with ENCOMIUM Weekly on Sunday, May 17, 2015, Ms. Ugwu expressed profound gratitude to the Federal Government for remembering her.

“Yes, it is true. I got an award from Federal Orientation Agency. I really appreciate their kind gesture. It really feels great to be honoured. I thank God that I was remembered.”

We further inquired if the agency promised her a better job.

“The man who addressed me, requested Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to provide a better job for me. I hope it works out”.

We also asked if it came with any monetary reward.

“I was given N30,000. I was told that is the amount they give in reward for any patriotic act. I am grateful for it but I need a better job”.

The Director General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri, on Thursday, May 14, 2015, presented the airport cleaner, Ms. Josephine Ugwu with Citizens Responsibility Recognition Award for her honesty.  Omeri said government was honouring her for doing the right thing. A conduct he said was in line with the new slogan of the agency. He said Ugwu has redeemed the image of the country which had been tainted by the conduct of a few Nigerians.

He urged her to continue displaying such exemplary conduct which is the traditional way of life of Nigerians. He further stated that, the Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency decided to honour the airport cleaner as a way of rewarding honesty and transparency.

A couple of months back, Ms Josephine Ugwu exhibited exceptional attribute that put her in the limelight and renewed Nigeria’s image in the international community. Ms. Ugwu in February returned $27,000 and other currencies which added up to N12 million left behind by a passenger to the Aviation Security (AVSEC) of the airport. Ugwu, who demonstrated integrity per excellence, was rewarded with a N7,200 salary increases. She was on a salary of N7,800 before she got an additional bonus. She has been rewarded by different agencies, religious bodies such as TREM, CLAM and a host of others.
