Lagos warns okada riders, street traders to desist from flouting law

The Lagos State Government in its effort at implementing the Section 3 of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012 to the letter has once again issued a warning to commercial motorcycle operators popularly called okada riders on all restricted routes and street traders to comply with the Law or risk arrest and prosecution.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, Olubukola Abe, a Superintendent of Police, who disclosed this in his office on Sunday said out of 9100 roads in the state motorcycle operators were restricted to only 475 roads which exclude highways and bridges according to the law. 

He said that enforcement by law enforcement officers will be intensified, assuring that they will not relent in their efforts to restore sanity on roads while curbing the excesses of okada riders and street traders. 

Abe said since he assumed office as the Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force on Monday 9 of August, 2015 till date, over 1000 motorcycle have been arrested and have some of their riders prosecuted including street traders/hawkers with their wares confiscated by the courts of law.

He however appeal to his officers and other law enforcement agents to carry out their duties diligently while enforcing the Law.
