Mediterranean diet keeps you genetically young and ‘helps you live longer’ – study

A new study has found that sticking to Mediterranean diet could be the key to a longer life.
The research, published in the British Medical Journal, monitored the health of 4,676 middle-aged nurses over more than a decade and analysed the impact of the diet on a component of DNA called telemeres and found that those who adhered to the diet, showed fewer signs of ageing in their cells.
Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “These results reinforce our advice that eating a balanced and healthy diet can reduce your risk of developing heart disease”.
Mediterranean diet is traditional in Mediterranean countries, characterised especially by a high consumption of vegetables and olive oil and moderate consumption of protein, and thought to confer health benefits.
