Nigeria fails to qualify for AFCON after 2-2 draw

African Cup of Nations (AFCON) holders, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will not get the chance to defend the title they won last year after they were held to a 2-2 home draw by South Africa today (November 19) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

The result leaves Nigeria in third place in the group as Congo defeated Sudan by a lone goal.

South Africa went ahead in the first half through striker Tokelo Rantie, who skipped past the Nigerian defenders and planted his shot high into the roof of the net.

The Bournemouth FC of England forward added a second early in the second half after disastrous defending by the African Champions.

Sone Aluko replaced Raheem Lawal and before long pulled one back for the hosts in the 68th minute. The Hull City of England frontman added a second late in the second half after Bafana Bafana had a man sent off, but it was a little too late to save the team.
