-Reiterates its commitment to \a cordial relationship with labour unions in the state
Following the decision of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, to embark on an indefinite strike, Lagos State Government has decided to apply the ‘No Work No-Pay’ rule to make the union understand that the issues it raised and reasons for the strike did not qualify for such action.
The government through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Otunba Fatai Olukoga, said the law which was approved by the Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), would be applied in its strictest measure, describing the action as unwholesome. The striking workers the Government said will in addition to losing their salaries not have, their check-off dues deducted while they stand the risk of suffering other disciplinary measures.
The Government, however, assured members of the union who wish to continue working of adequate protection against any form of harassment, advising such workers to feel free to report on Monday for duty at the university where a register would be opened for them.
The latest stand of government followed the submission of a report by the ad-hoc committee set up by the State Executive Council to consider a strike notice issued by the LASU chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Committee was directed to examine the issues raised in the 14-days ultimatum letter which includes to consider whether or not the issues, which include reversal of LASU School fees, repeal of No Vacancy No promotion policy of LASU administration and implementation of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act, 2012, qualified for a strike action.
