Prince William and Kate Middleton join world leaders for WW1 centenary in Belgium

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Prince William and Kate Middleton – represented the Queen of England at a memorial service in honour of the estimated 10 million people who lost their lives during World War One, 100 year ago.

Prince William spoke in solemn tones, standing precisely 30 miles from where German soldiers made their assault on the Belgian borders on August 4, 1914, acknowledging that though they had been enemies in the past century, now they were “friends and allies”.

The ceremony was the first time the royal couple would be officially representing the Queen.
