Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua, otherwise known as Seyi Shey is no pushover in the music industry. With her amazing vocal abilities, she has been able to thrill her fans with hits after hits.

This she continues with her latest effort, Murda, which features Girlie O crooner, Patoranking and EME’s Shaydee.

ENCOMIUM Weekly spoke with her on her new single…

Seyi Shay (2)Congratulations on the success of your video shoot. Take us through the experience?

Thank you. We spent about a week deciding on a treatment. The shoot was surprisingly quick as soon as we had all the locations costume and cast sorted out. I rehearsed the choreography with Kaffy for about four days. We flew in the director and crew and the rest is history. We were all on the same page so that helped the process.

The single, Murda was released about two months ago. Tell us more about the song?

The song is written by myself, Shaydee from EME, Patoranking and Sound Sultan and produced by Dr. Frabz. We recorded the song in my house and we all agreed within the same week it should be released. It sounded special.

How was the acceptance?

People really liked it. It trended on twitter for about three or four days. People were begging for a video a week after it was released. It was number one on Beat FM and Notjustok.com and other platforms within the week of its release.

How has it been doing in the market ever since?

We have been getting a lot of requests to do it at shows. The views on Vevo are now over 100,000 and people from different continents write to tell me how much they love it.

Murda has a catchy beat. Who produced it?

Dr. Frabz.

The video was shot by Meji Alabi. What informed the choice?

Meji Alabi works with my partners, J-Management, it was their decision to give him a shot. As his first

music video in Nigeria, I think he did a pretty good job.

You went for a hip look on the video. What inspired it?

My British roots. London is a very hip and trendy town. I lived there so, I wanted to take it back and do something different that was more me with a twist of dancehall. I wanted to be fresh.

What do you think stands the song out?

I have not heard a similar song in the market. I’m a risk taker. I like to be different.

What informed the choice of Patoranking and Shaydee on the song?

Shaydee and I wrote the song. Patoranking was recommended by my producer, Del B.

What’s your assessment of your career so far this year?

Steadily rising. There have been ups and downs but I trust the pace I’m on. God has been especially good to me.

What are the plans you have for the remaining part of the year?

Album release, more endorsements, Coke Studios in Kenya, Bring Back Our Girls Concert in New York City, USA, university tours in Nigeria and London and to branch out into the rest of Africa. It’s now time.

How do you plan to remain strong and relevant despite the growing number of female stars in the

industry?

I intend remaining original and not following or copying anybody.

What do you have to say to young aspiring artistes?

Be original. Be proactive and be strong.
