– Registry ceremony with Maje Ayida cancelled
IF you have been in doubt about the break-up between popular on-air personality, Miss Toke Makinwa and her boyfriend of 12 years, Maje Ayida, you don’t have to anymore. Makinwa herself confirmed the break-up in an interview she had with Kemi Lawal in Sunday Punch of December 15, 2013.
According to her, “I am not under any pressure to get married. It’s the society that puts pressure on women not minding that divorce rates are high. I was once in a long term relationship with Maje Ayida and it has come to an end. I think it’s unfair for me to speak about our relationship because he is not here to defend himself. He is an amazing guy but it was not meant to be. It’s strange being single again but I am taking it one step after the other. One of the mistakes I made in my last relationship is that we dated for a long time. They were amazing years but they were also long 12 years. When you are faithful to someone, know what you can tolerate. My Mr. Right has to be God-fearing, who would not do certain things because he is God fearing. He has to understand what I do and must not be selfish in any way.”
ENCOMIUM Weekly on the same Sunday, December 15, 2013, at about 6.25 p.m called Miss Makinwa to get more clarification on the break-up tale. This is now the interview went:
Good evening, madam. I guess I am speaking with Miss Toke Makinwa?
Yes, who is this?
I am Tolani Abatti from ENCOMIUM magazine. Did you see the text message I sent to you?
No.
I sent it about 30 minutes ago.
I have not seen it. What is it about?
We read your interview in today’s Punch newspaper and want to ask you one or two questions about it.
What do you want to ask again. I am not going to say anything. It will be unfair on my part to be talking about it when the other person is not here to defend himself.
We will like you to explain what you meant with the statement, “When you are faithful to someone, know what you can tolerate.” The statement is pregnant.
There is nothing to it. It is you people that are introducing meaning into it.
We also want to know if it is true that there was supposed to be a traditional introduction between your family and that of your boyfriend family and he did not turn up.
I guess I really have to go now.
(And she switched off).
Earlier in October when ENCOMIUM Weekly spoke to her about her then upcoming wedding, she was practically evasive.
We asked her:
We still want sneak peak of your wedding plans. The last time we had a chat with you, you told us you would let us know when it’s time?
I am still going to let you know when all my plans have come together, God-willing.
The romance between Toke Makinwa and her boyfriend, Maje Ayida, who some say is a fitness expert has been the talk in the social circle for sometime now.
They were said to have done their traditional/engagement wedding sometime in February, 2013 and were waiting to do the registry and the church wedding within this year.
Toke herself confirmed this in an interview with Genevieve magazine in the first week of November 2013. In the interview, she said, “I’ve known him (Maje Ayida) for 11 years. We’ve been dating off and on for about eight years.
“Yes, we got engaged this year (2013). We were supposed to get married this year as well. I think it’s our scheduling. Our schedules got so busy.”
Many were therefore, expecting the wedding bells to toll for the couple before the year runs out. But a post on the Twitter by Maje Ayida on December 4, 2013, gave the first hint that all is not well between the two. Here are some of the tweets…
“If it’s more important to be in the social scene than support someone u care for then it’s simple u don’t care.”
Another one of his tweet read thus: “And u certainly don’t tell people you are done with them via BB status especially if all they do is love u and take care of u.”
Yet another one: “Love is patient, kind and supportive. Love is not emotionless and unforgiving.”
Toke’s interview on Sunday, December 15, 2013, finally confirmed the break-up between her and Maje.
ENCOMIUM Weekly gathered that what finally broke the 12 years romance was Maje Ayida’s failure to turn up at the registry the day they were supposed to do the court registry aspect of their wedding.
29 year-old Toke Makinwa is an on-air personality with Rhythm 93.7FM. She and Nanya anchor the radio station’s Morning Ride show. A graduate of English Literature from University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. Interestingly, she has a v-log called Toke Moments, where she talks about relationship.
Maje Ayida is a fitness/wellness expert and entrepreneur.
