Alleged wife killer, Lekan Shonde still remanded in Ikoyi Prisons

‘We’re still awaiting DPP report’ – Counsel

The fate of alleged wife killer, Lekan Shonde is still hanging in the balance as the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Lagos, is yet to come out with its report on the case.

This was confirmed when ENCOMIUM Weekly visited the Magistrate Court, Ebute Meta, Lagos, where the case is being handled, on Thursday, January 26, 2017, and we were made to understand that the court has no power to go ahead with the case without the DPP’s advice.

One of the workers who pleaded anonymity said, “The case is still pending. What’s causing the delay is the result of investigation by the DPP. The court is yet to receive any report from the DPP on Lekan Shonde. And without that, his case can’t be transferred to the High Court. That means he will continue to be in remand in Ikoyi prisons. That’s where he will be pending the report from the DPP. We’re also waiting for that. Soon as we get that, he will be properly arraigned.”

On Saturday, January 28, 2017, ENCOMIUM Weekly also contacted Shonde’s lawyer, Barrister I B Muhammed who also corroborated the earlier submission. He added that it’s his happiness that the report is out very soon to enable him pursue the case diligently as required of him.

“Yes, Lekan Shonde is still being remanded in Ikoyi prisons. We’re still awaiting DPP report, without which there’s no way I can continue with the case. It’s after the report is released that the magistrate Court can arraign him, and the case will be transferred to the High Court. I am yet to be briefed on that and I don’t even know how long it will take for it to come out. So, we’re still waiting.”

On Thursday, May 5, 2016, Shonde allegedly killed his wife of eight years and mother of his two children, Ronke by giving her a fist blow on her head as contained in the autopsy report by the pathologists from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja which was submitted to the police on Tuesday, May 17, 2016.

The corpse of the 37 year old Ronke was discovered by a nanny and neighbours at their Tiemo Crescent, Egbeda, Lagos home on Friday, May 6, 2016.

However, after the outcome of the autopsy, Shonde was docked at the Magistrate Court, Ebute Meta, Lagos on Friday, May 20, 2016, and facing a murder charge before Magistrate O. I. Adelaja having established that he had committed a capital offence. He has since been remanded in Ikoyi prisons in line with Administration of Criminal Justice Law 246(1) of Lagos state.
