Buruji Kashamu’s travails -Still under house arrest

‘His God will vindicate him’ –Aide

It’s surely not the best of times for senator-elect, Mr. Buruji Kashamu who has been placed under house arrest since Saturday, May 23, 2015, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

kashamu1The Ijebu Igbo, Ogun born politician who has refused to surrender himself to the officials of the narcotics agency, ENCOMIUM Weekly learnt, has embarked on fasting and praying, waiting for a divine intervention on his present predicament.

Speaking with ENCOMIUM Weekly on Monday, May 25, 2015, Kasamu’s spokesperson, Austen Oniyokor lampooned the action of the NDLEA. He described it as complete illegality and flagrant disregard of fundamental rights of the famous politician. He therefore urged the body to follow due process and produce Kashamu in court as required by the law.

He was, however, optimistic that his boss will overcome the challenge as he has handed over the matter to God.

“To say the fact, the action of the NDLEA is not only illegal but a complete violation of Kahamu’s human right as a citizen of this country. He was placed under house arrest forcefully, without any warrant of arrest from any court of law. In fact, what the officials of the NDLEA and Attorney General of the Federation have done is called contempt of court.

They forcefully entered Kashamu’s house, harassed and intimidated his family even, his pregnant wife. All in the process of wanting to get him arrested at all cost. Even, every right thinking Nigerian knows it’s illegal to do that.”

“However, the court has ordered the Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke and the chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade to appear in court today to explain reasons for their action. It’s the outcome of today’s hearing that will determine the next line of action by our legal team.

But one thing is sure, the man will soon get over the problem because he prays a lot. Kashamu Buruji is a devout muslim. He believes in God, and I also believe strongly that his God will vindicate him.”

Meanwhile, the NDLEA had on Monday, May 25, 2015, failed to bring the senator-elect for Ogun East senatorial district, Mr. Kashamu, before a federal high court, Lagos for extradition hearing despite a declaration by the agency that he would be produced in court.

The agency, whose operatives had laid siege to Kashamu’s Lekki, Lagos residence since Saturday, May 23, 2015, insisted it had received a formal extradition request on Kashamu from the United States of America for drug related charges which informed its decision to place the embattled politician and businessman under house arrest pending the time he will surrender himself to the operatives of the agency.

According to the report credited to the NDLEA’s spokesman, Ogoyeju Mitchel, in one of the dailies, Senator Kashamu has failed to appear in court from his house where he is being closely monitored by the operatives of the narcotics agency.

“The agency is working hard to ensure that the submits himself to the one process of the law. His house remained cordoned off by anti-narcotics officer pending his appearance in court,” h was quoted as saying.

However, one of the counsels to Kashamu, Barr. Ajibola Oluyede reportedly claimed that an operative of the NDLEA was in court on Monday, May 25, 2015 to secure a provisional warrant of arrest.

According to him, the move was a confirmation that the NDLEA had no extradition request for Kashamu from the US as being claimed by the agency.

“For the NDLEA to have come to court on Monday to secure a provisional warrant of arrest, that confirms that the agency had no extradition request for Kashamu from the US. And that the move was also a confirmation of Kashamu’s alarm that the NDLEA was doing the bidding of his political enemies,” he was quoted as having said.
