The on-going saga at Caleb University, Lagos, doesn’t seem it would come to an end anytime soon. This is so as the institution has imposed a staggering surcharge of up to N150 million on all its students as punishment for the damages done to the school’s property during a riot by some students on May 14.
The school was thrown into pandemonium when students of Caleb University took the law into their hands, destroying properties of the institution when a male staff of the school identified as Osunbo, allegedly stopped a Muslim student from praying in his religious way, which sparked violent reactions from the students.
Osunbo, who works in the Student Affairs department of the Christian-based institution, was said to have also beaten the Muslim student to a pulp.
All the students were subsequently ordered to vacate the campus on May 15 and await further directives.
But to the consternation of the students and their parents, they received text messages on May 23, from the university, asking male students to pay N100,000 each and females to pay N50,000 each as surcharge for damages to the school’s property during the riot.
The surcharge must be paid before they would be allowed to resume on June 2.
The school, with a student population of about 1,500 is expected to make about N150 million from the surcharge for damages.
There are also allegations that the damages to the school properties is not actually as much as previously quoted with witnesses declaring that it should not cost more than N10 million for damages.
The text message sent to parents by the university on May 23 reads: “CUL parents and students are hereby notified that school resumes Mon, June 2. Exams start Mon, June 9. Male students are to pay N100,000 while the female would pay N50,000 by bank draft into Ecobank Account 1993000979 to offset damage to school property. Balance of school fees should be paid into Sterling Bank Acct. 0020022195.
“No student would be allowed into the university premises without evidence of payment of school fees and the surcharge. A guarantor must accompany each student with a letter of undertaking to be of good behaviour.”
ENCOMIUM Weekly spoke with some of the students on the new sanction imposed by the school but only two agreed to speak under anonymity for fear of “further retribution”.
A second year male student said, “I can’t believe they could ask us to pay so much for damages. They should publish pictures of the properties that we damaged that is worth up to 150 million naira. I agree that people should pay for the damages but this is just ridiculous”.
“I think that in the interest of those of us that did not even have anything to do with the riot, it is very unfair. They should not even stop us from resuming or writing our exams. I hope the students will unite and reject this in a responsible way. We should drag them to the NUC, the House of Assembly and even the National Assembly if we have to.”
Others took to popular social media, Twitter to vent their frustration at the fine.
@AlexOba_: So adebogun wants to use me to make about a million dollars (150m naira) #CalebUniversity
@CHUZZUS: – I’m tired of Caleb University
