DStv and GOtv brings you the best from ESPN this weekend

Viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to even greater sporting variety, with some thrilling action coming their way on ESPN and ESPN 2 from Friday 7 to Thursday 13 August 2020.

ESPN

As viewers head into the weekend, they can get their fill of news from the National Football League (NFL) and National Basketball Association (NBA) with live airings of NFL Live and The Jump on the evening of Friday 7 August (7:00pm and 8:00pm LIVE on ESPN) – the next editions of these programmes will also air on Monday 10 August at the same times.

Fans of National League Rugby (NRL) can enjoy live action on Sunday morning when the Sharks take on the Eels at the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium. The Sharks are fresh off a strong comeback win over the Broncos, a performance which left coach John Morris a happy man.

“It was certainly one of the most courageous wins at our club that I have been a part of,” Morris said. “We came up here without Josh Dugan, Jesse Ramien, Chad Townsend, Matt Moylan and Andrew Fifita and lost young Jacko [Jackson Ferris] during the game so I thought it was a marvellous effort to come from behind.

The weekend and working week to follow will be a great one for fans of the electric racing series,  Jaguar I-Pace E-Trophy and Formula E. ESPN will feature the Round 6 and 7 races for the former on Saturday (3:30pm LIVE on ESPN) and Sunday (10:05am LIVE on ESPN) respectively, and Round 10 and 11 qualifying for the latter on Wednesday (12:05pm LIVE on ESPN) and Thursday (1:00pm LIVE on ESPN) respectively.

In Formula E, Mahindra have reacquired the services of British driver Alex Lynn, who is looking to make a big impression around the streets of Berlin. The electric single-seater series will have several thrilling races in the German city, on different layouts and in the space of just a few days, to finish the 2019-20 season out.

“We want to turn up in Berlin and put on a good show there,” said Lynn. “What that is, we’re not sure yet. But we want to be fighting for big points. We want to stick the car upfront in qualifying and the races. That’s really the aim for the next six races. It’s gonna come very fast and we need to be ready for that.”

ESPN 2

Viewers can enjoy some cracking National League Rugby (NRL) action as the Storm host the Bulldogs on the morning of Saturday 8 August (6:00am LIVEon ESPN 2) and look to claim another fine victory, having downed the Knights 26-16 this past weekend.

Storm’s Josh Addo-Carr has also made an impressive social impact with his stance in support of Indigenous NRL players, who are coming to the fore and making their voices heard. “We had to stay quiet 30, 40 years ago but now we’ve got strength in numbers, we’ve got Indigenous athletes sticking up for each other,” Addo-Carr said. “Who else is going to do it? No one is going to do it but us! We’re just proud of who we are and that’s all it is.”

Motor racing fans will have more than their fair share of tyre-shredding action, with live coverage from the Jaguar I-Pace E-Trophy, Formula E and IndyCar. The highlight will definitely arrive on Thursday 13 August with the season finale races in Berlin for both electric series:  the Jaguar I-Pace E-Trophy, Round 10 race will air at 3:30pm (LIVE on ESPN 2) and Formula E’s Round 11 starts at 18:30 (LIVE on ESPN 2).

Formula E presenter Vernon Kay explains why the electric single-seater series is one of the most entertaining forms of motor sport anywhere in the world: “In Formula E, there’s lots of overtaking. There’s lots of crashing because we’re on short tight circuits and the intensity of the racing for 45 minutes is absolutely awesome,” he stated. “Watch it, enjoy it and instead of saying they’re like Scalextric cars, in the back of your head, say they sound like TIE Fighters from Star Wars.”

The IndyCar Series, meanwhile, will be featured on Sunday 9 August with Race 2 from Mid-Ohio (6:00pm LIVE on ESPN 2).

Following a recent test with the Chip Ganassi racing team, NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson is hoping to have the opportunity to drive in IndyCar sooner rather than later.

“It only lit the fire more. I want to do this more than ever before,” Johnson explained. “It was something new, something different. NASCAR has been so good to me. and I am so proud of the success I’ve had. But to try something new, man, this was really cool.”
