Eateries boom again as Nigeria certified Ebola free

When the Ebola Virus Disease crept into Nigeria, people became very conscious of their eating outside their homes. Since the country was declared Ebola free god times have returned to hotels and restaurants.
ENCOMIUM Weekly spoke to some operators and their responses were heart warming.

MR. ADEDEFE. ONI
The Prince of Anthony Hotel and Suites, Oyedele Ogunniyi Street, Anthony Village, Lagos.

How would you describe patronage since Nigeria has been certified Ebola free?
Patronage now is excellent! We are so happy now, people troop in and out daily. I believe this is the answer to our prayer because it was a little bit rough in four to five months but now everything is normal.
Can you compare patronage before Ebola broke out and when we were certified free of it?
No, because then, a lot of people were afraid of the virus so this really reduced our customer base. People were more careful and we really felt the impact of the disease. Thanks to Allah, now, we are free from the virus and everything has returned to normal.
Will you say you have gained more customers since we became Ebola free?
Yes, we have more customers, there are new faces every day.
What are the precautions you are taking now?
We know Ebola is a deadly disease and we have to stop it spreading by implementing precautions like cooking our food and meat properly, wearing of hand gloves, washing of hands regularly. And there are standby sanitizers everywhere in the hotel.

There is a tremendous patronage these days since we were declared Ebola free.
Can you compare patronage before Ebola broke out and when we were certified free of it?
We can’t compare the two because we really felt the impact of Ebola when it broke out. Customers did not patronize us then, if at all they did, they never asked for meat they rather went for fish. People were conscious of what they ate then. Thanks to government for containing Ebola on time.
Will you say you have gained more customers, since we became Ebola free?
Yes, we have a lot of new customers.
What are the precautions you are taking now?
We provide sanitizers and other protective facilities for our customers against the virus.

It was so serious then, business was so rough that everything was at stand still. People didn’t patronize us, at times we would cook but people wouldn’t even come in to ask what we sell. In short, it was terrible then but thank God now things are in shape, all the business activities have returned to normal.

How will you describe patronage since Nigeria has been certified Ebola free?
The rate at which people are patronizing our hotel now is even beyond our imagination though it was like that before the outbreak certified, immediately Ebola came, we started having low patronage but now it has taken a new dimension.
There is huge patronage now, thanks to the Federal Government and Dr (Mrs.) Adadevoh for saving Nigeria from the dreaded disease and in containing the virus.
Can you compare patronage before Ebola broke out and when we were certified free of it?
Sincerely, I can boldly tell that we have gained so many customers than ever before.
Will you say you have gained more customers since we became Ebola free?
The hotel has infrared thermometre to check the temperature of our customers. Also we have carried out a thorough test on all our staff and again there is a sanitizer for all our customers before lodging or do anything with us.

MRS. ASABI
Asabiade Food Restaurant, Opposite Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos.

How will you describe patronage since Nigeria has been certified Ebola free?
It has been wonderful. Thanks to Almighty Father. There has been good patronage in the last two months.
Can you compare patronage before Ebola broke out and when we were certified free of it?
No, it is not comparable at all, restaurant owners really felt it because people stopped patronizing us, they prefer eating in the house than coming to restaurant or joint due to the Ebola virus. No one would blame them because one needs to be careful. The advert on radio about being careful with what we eat helped a lot of people, so it was really tough, my dear. Thank God things are okay now.
Will you say you have gained more customers since we became Ebola free?
Infact, a lot, my sister. I bless the name of God and I am still praying for more customers.
What are the precautions you are taking now?
I am trying to keep my surroundings clean, I have cultivated the habit of using hand gloves in whatever we are doing and up till now we are still using them. The use of sanitizer is very important here.
