EPL Relegation Fight: Who’s on the Brink of Disaster After the Break?

As the international break ends, Premier League clubs entrenched in the relegation battle brace for a decisive run of fixtures. The looming threat of dropping to the Championship carries severe financial repercussions, potential squad overhauls, and an arduous journey back to the top tier. With every match now a high-stakes affair, which teams face the toughest path to survival?

As of April 2, 2025, the bottom five teams in the Premier League (in descending order) are: Southampton FC (2 wins, 24 losses); Leicester City (4 wins, 20 losses); Ipswich Town (3 wins, 18 losses); Wolverhampton Wanderers (7 wins, 17 losses); West Ham United (9 wins, 13 losses).

For Southampton, relegation now seems inevitable. They’ve collected a meager two wins all season and are staring at the possibility of equaling Derby County’s infamous 2007-08 record low, where they recorded 29 losses and ended the season with a goal difference of negative 69. Leicester City, after a promising return to the Premier League, have collapsed into a crisis. Seven consecutive home defeats have drained morale, and manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is under mounting pressure.

Ipswich Town, though initially hailed for their refreshing style, now find themselves ten points from safety, and their survival prospects hinge on an improbable late-season resurgence. Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United remain in precarious positions, teetering on the edge of the relegation zone with little margin for error.

The road ahead is brutal for these struggling teams, and fixture lists could play a decisive role in sealing their fate. Southampton FC face top-four teams, making their survival difficult. Leicester City’s post-break fixture list is unforgiving, featuring Manchester City, Newcastle, Brighton, and Liverpool.

“Leicester have struggled defensively all season but their current lack of goals is an even bigger problem”, BBC pundit Chris Sutton wrote,  “They have not found the net in any of their past five league matches, and have lost all of them.” Their last game against United, which was available for streaming on Showmax Premier League mobile, was a devastating 3-0 defeat. Obviously, if they lose their next three games, their hope of playing in the league next season would be slim.

Ipswich Town have a slightly more favorable fixture list; this offers them a glimmer of hope, but they must improve drastically; Wolverhampton Wanderers face a mix of top-four contenders and fellow relegation battlers, making for a challenging run-in; while West Ham United’s relatively lighter schedule provides a fighting chance to claw out of danger.

Given the current landscape, Southampton FC’s dismal form makes relegation almost certain; Leicester City, facing formidable opponents and internal turmoil, have their Premier League tenure hanging by a thread; Ipswich Town, despite their position, could find a lifeline in their favorable fixture list; Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United both have the potential to escape the drop, but consistency will be key. Injuries sustained during the international break could further complicate survival bids. As the season reaches its climax, experience, mentality, and sheer determination will dictate which clubs endure the agony of relegation and which emerge unscathed.
