The cost of living for an average Nigerian is increasing by the day. Prices of commodities are sky rocketing daily. It is gradually becoming a case of survival of the fittest. Most households are cutting down cost, despite that, they still groan under poor economic hardship.

The prices of things are really soaring. It is on an alarming rate. This happens every day. Some attribute the increment to rise in dollar exchange but I don’t think dollar is responsible. At least, the dollar rate is not as high as it used to be.

How are you coping with the hike?

We are coping by God’s grace. We just have to eat. No matter how bad it is, man must eat. We are praying that God will continue to supply all our needs.

Can you list examples of what are expensive?

The list is endless really – beans, rice and yam. Everything! Bread has gone up as well. We used to buy sliced bread for N200, it is now N230, N250.

Prices of commodities have gone up. Virtually all items are affected. And it is a daily occurrence. You need to see how Nigerians are suffering. A lot of households cannot eat balanced diet. It is just what they see that they eat now.

How are you coping with the hike?

I don’t even know. I just know we are just there. We are surviving, taking each day as it comes. But I must say, it has not been easy. It has not really been easy.

Rice has gone up. From N10,000 a bag, it is now N13,000. Wheat has gone up too. It was N500 per paint bucket before, it is now N600. Sugar has gone up too.

Definitely, everybody is feeling the bite. At times, I wonder where the country is going. I think something needs to be done before it all gets out of control.

How are you coping with the hike?

We have a priority list. We only get what we can afford and leave the rest. I have also taught my children to be satisfied with what we can afford. They take what we can offer without complaining.

Palm oil has gone up. I was buying a bottle at N100 it is now N120.   Semolina is also expensive, it was N2,200 per 10kg before it is now N2,600. The hike has affected everything.

Prices of commodities have gone up. Even tomatoes that used to be much cheaper is now expensive. Some said it is as a result of the Mile 2 market closure

How are you coping with the hike?

We buy what we can afford and leave the rest. Nigerians need to pray so that God can heal our land.

Tomatoes used to be the only commodity that was not affected but now, the price has gone up. The quantity I buy for N200 is now N300. I learnt a basket is almost N10,000.

Yes, prices of food stuffs have gone up. There is hardly a commodity that is not affected. Every Nigerian is groaning, especially bread winners. In fact, everybody. Most of us have no increment in our salaries. I know of a woman, who has not collected salary since September 2015. You can imagine what such a person will be going through.

How are you coping with the hike?

We are coping. I am also into other businesses so as to meet up. Apart from that, I don’t take more than I can handle.

The soap I used to buy for N1,000 is now N1,200. Okro as well has gone up. The quantity we buy for N100 now is what was sold for N50.

Saying that is an understatement. Times are really hard. Nigerians are just trying to cope with the harsh realities of things. May God help us in Nigeria.

How are you coping with the hike?

We try to cut our coat according to our cloth. We work hard and pray that God will continue to provide for our needs. Myself and my husband are also into business, aside having a pay job, yet it has not been easy.

Everything, even to the smallest commodity has gone up. Even matches, soaps and other items have gone up.

Yes, the prices of commodities have really skyrocketed. If you buy a commodity in the morning at a certain price, when you want to purchase the same later, the price might have changed.

How are you coping with the hike?

We sell what we buy the way we buy them. We try not to put much money so we can sell them quickly.

Semovita was N230 for 1kg now N270, salt was N100 per sachet now N120. Vegetable oil has increased to N4,000 per 30 litres.

Everything in the market have increased in price. Things are really expensive now.

I just have to buy them. I cut down and minimize cost. I also buy things that are essential.

Derica of rice was N170 now N200. Even a sachet of pure water was N5, now N10, Sardine was sold for N150 now N200.
