Lagos State Senior Model College, Ikosi Agbowa wins Felabration School Debates

In a keenly contested Felabration Secondary School Debate held inside the Freedom Park, Lagos Island, Tuesday October 6, 2015, the Lagos State Senior Model College, Ikosi, Agbowa, emerged this year’s Champion.

Ten secondary schools were earlier listed as the finalists to the annual event. Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, however did not turn up for the contest. The nine that competed were:

(1) Epe Grammar School, Epe, Lagos.

(2) Aunty Ayo Comprehensive Secondary School, Keffi, Ikoyi, Lagos.

(3) King’s College, Lagos.

(4) Vivian Fowler Memorial Schools for Girls, Oregun, Lagos.

(5) Metropolitan Senior College, Isolo, Lagos.

(6) Oriwu Model College, Ikorodu, Lagos.

(7) Dowen College, Lekki Phase1, Lagos.

(8) Lagos State Senior Model College, Ikosi Agbowa, Lagos.

(9) Meiran Community High School, Meiran, Lagos.

The Topic of contention was the all time quote of Africa’s great leader Nelson Mandela: Poverty, like slavery and apartheid, is not an accident; it is man made and can be removed by the action of human beings.

The first five listed Schools above spoke in support of the topic while the numbers 6-9 spoke against the topic. Each speaker had five minutes each to argue his/her position.

The first segment of the debate produced a top five: King’s College, Epe Grammar School, Aunty Ayo Comprehensive Secondary School, Dowen College and Lagos State Senior Model College.

These top five were further given five minutes each to Marshall their points more convincingly.

At the end, three schools emerged winners:

1st: Lagos State Senior Model College, Ikosi Agbowa.

2nd: King’s College, Lagos.

3rd: Dowen College, Lekki Phase1.

Each of these top three won 2 computer tablets and a mini laptop.
While all the nine participating schools were rewarded with a 32inch LED Flat screen Sharp Television Set each.

The distinguished Panel of Judges are:
Adesuwa Onyenekwe (Seasoned Broadcaster/Publisher), Kunle Bakare (Publisher), Olajide Bello (Renowned Barrister), Morayo Afolabi Brown. (Top On Air Personality/Media Guru), Jumoke Alawode James (Media Consultant/Communications Expert)

While standup comedian, Teju Babyface was the compere.

Felabration Secondary Schools Debate is an annual event part of the Felabration Festival designed to stimulate brainstorming session amongst Nigeria Secondary Schools. It usually yearly sets the tone for the main festival.

Felabration Is the Festival created by Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, eldest child and daughter of Fela to celebrate The Life, Times and Music of her father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Started over a decade ago the festival has gone Global and is today celebrated across the world by different peoples. It is hosted around the birthday of Fela. This year’s Festival is billed for October 12-18, 2015, in Nigeria and simultaneously across the world.
