Two of the world’s biggest chocolate makers, Germany’s Mars Inc and Switzerland-based Barry Callebaut have warned that the world may run out of chocolate by 2020, if consumption is not cut down.
Consumers are eating about 70,000 metric tons more cocoa than was produced last year (which could potentially go up to 1million metric tons by 2020). Also, Ivory Coast and Ghana, who produce more than 70 percent of the world’s cocoa beans, are experiencing dry weather that limits growth.
To worsen the situation, a fungal disease called frosty pod has destroyed 30 to 40 percent of world’s cocoa production, according to the International Cocoa Organization.
