The number of immigrants into Britain using fake marriages to gain entry is increasing at a ‘alarming rate’, according to the head of Home Affairs committee, Keith Vaz, of the UK parliament.
He warned that the situation is spiralling out of control as tens of thousand of immigrants could be coming into the UK every year through these bogus marriages, he said, “there is an industry of deceit in the UK which uses sham marriages to circumvent immigration control”.
The number of suspect couples referred to the Home Office in three years has doubled – and the Government estimates there are up to 10,000 sham marriages taking place each year.
Meanwhile, British prime minister – David Cameron – has pledged to get the net migration down to the tens of thousands by next year.
