Humans could start living for as old as 120 years if the discovery made by scientists in Russia is anything to go by.
The researchers are testing a new formula which they claim can delay the start of ageing, and thus help people live longer. They are using a ‘new type of antioxidant’, which they hope will impact on the mitochondria, the energy-producing part of cells, which is seen as triggering ageing.
Researcher Dr Maxim Skulachev, from the Moscow (Russia) State University project, said: “A lot of ageing diseases developed much slower. If it turns out that diseases develop more slowly, our idea to fight ageing through mitochondria is the right one. It will be possible to postpone old age”.
