X3M music act, Simi Ogunleye popularly referred to as Simi is planning the release of an album this year. In an interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly, she shared her excitement over her hit singles and other issues.
How did you feel when you performed at The Headies?
It was exhilarating to be on the stage and to be a part of the event as a whole.
Why did you decide to feature Falz on your hit single, Jamb Question?
My team and I made that decision because he was obviously the best option. He sent me a verse after he heard the original and I loved it. The rest, as they say, is history.
Your song Jamb Question was a success, how do you feel?
I’m in awe everyday that a song that I spent time to put my heart into has been received and appreciated by so many people on and off the shores of Nigeria. I’m so grateful every single day and I don’t think I even have the ability to take it for granted.
Open and Close is also getting air play, would you say it’s a success too?
Open and Close was me trying to make a statement and also explore. I don’t want people to limit me. I want to be able to comfortably find new territories and see if I can thrive there. In my opinion, that’s what makes art so precious. Many people were caught off guard by the song, but it has surely gained a lot of ground. People love it and I’m glad.
What inspires your kind of music?
The things I sing about are inspired by the things I see, hear and experience. Everything tells me something. Sometimes, that something becomes a great song.
People say your voice is similar to Asa’s, what is your opinion?
I love Asa since I was a teenager, so I’m flattered. I think there are similarities, but I don’t think anyone would ever confuse us for each other.
What is your relationship with Adekunle Gold? Rumours have it that you are having an affair?
No comment.
Apart from singing, what else do you do?
I’m a professional songwriter. I’m a mix/master engineer. I’m a writer.
Do you intend to practice what you studied?
Eventually, I intend to use it somehow.
What is your review of 2015, highs and lows of the year.
Jamb Question blew up in 2015, I made a song with Falz, Soldier, that people fell in love with. I also put out my latest single, Open and Close and I won a couple of awards. So, definitely, 2015 was an amazing year for me, thank God.
What are your plans for 2016?
We plan on putting out the album this year. We’re also working on releasing more singles and videos. I’m working on collaborations as well.
How do you intend to execute them?
By doing whatever it takes to make it happen.
What new thing are you adding to your career to make a difference?
Everyday, I’m learning something new – music wise or business wise. There’s always something I don’t know yet. So, I try to figure it out bit by bit.
When should we expect your album?
Sometime this year.
