Team Lagos dazzles at National Youth Games

The investment of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State in Grassroots Sports Development has continued to yield positive results with the performance of Team Lagos at the ongoing 4th Edition of the National Youth Games (U-15) holding at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to the Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Adedayo Tandoh, despite participating in the games for the first time, Lagos State athletes have won 14 Gold, 10 Silver and 16 Bronze Medals so far.

Dr. Tandoh attributed the performance of the State’s contingent to the Lagos State Government Grassroots Sports Development initiative of the present administration through the State Sports Commission.

In his words, “Since the beginning of this year, we have been exposing these athletes to various school sports championships to prepare them in readiness for any competition. The National Youth Games (U-15) is a good platform to test them further and I can see that they are not disappointing us”.

He stated that the results so far in the ongoing games is a proof of the great investment of the State government in Sports, especially at the grassroots, adding that “So far, so good; l am impressed with the performance of Team Lagos at this 2018 National Youth Games”.

He commended the present administration for investing in School Sports and giving it the utmost priority in the State, emphasising that students are allowed to register for any sport of interest and develop their budding talents.

Meanwhile, three athletes from Lagos have been outstanding in their sports at the games – Abimbola Disu, won three gold medals in gymnastics event, while two weightlifters, Emmanuel Tuesday and Zainab Quadri won three gold medals each in the weightlifting events.

The games will end on Sunday, September 17, 2018.
