The Macallan Invests in Africa’s Fashion Industry, Partners Nigerian Fashion Brand, ATAFO.

In a year marked by strategic milestones and creative collaborations, The Macallan has further strengthened its reputation for pairing luxury with artistry. The latest chapter in its narrative unfolded on November 30, 2024, with a spectacular fashion showcase at Center Point, Ikoyi, Lagos, where the renowned whisky brand partnered with Award-winning Nigerian designer Mai Atafo to unveil his Spring Summer 2025 collection – Synonymously Luxe.  This collaboration exemplifies The Macallan’s dedication to championing craftsmanship across disciplines, blending its legacy of whisky-making with the timeless artistry of Nigerian tailoring.

2024 has been a standout year for The Macallan in Africa. From the launch of The Reach, its oldest whisky, to the celebration of its 200-year legacy with the debut of The Tales of The Macallan Volume II, the brand has consistently engaged its audience with high-profile events and exclusive releases. Alongside these milestones, The Macallan has expanded its footprint in Nigeria, introducing limited releases like The Classic Cut 2023 Release and A Night on Earth-The Journey, while unveiling luxury lounges at prominent locations such as Kaly Restaurant Lagos and The Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja.

In a broader commitment to arts, The Macallan also supported ‘Mirrors of Our Time’, a contemporary art showcase at the Alexis Gallery, further demonstrating its dedication to nurturing creative talent across various sectors.

The collaboration with Mai Atafo is part of The Macallan’s strategy to align with the burgeoning African fashion industry, which is projected to generate $770.90 billion in revenue with an annual growth rate of 8.94% from 2024 to 2029. The Synonymously Luxe collection, a masterful blend of classic tailoring and contemporary design, offers sophisticated yet versatile pieces that cater to diverse occasions.

The event brought together Lagos’s elite, fashion influencers, and creative industry leaders, including The Founder and CEO of Red Media, Adebola Williams; Award-winning media host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu; Fashion & Lifestyle Content Creator, Akin Faminu; Producer, TV & Radio Presenter, IK Osakioduwa; CEO, Eton House, Francis Obazuwa; Multimedia personality, Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi, among others. Guests were immersed in an experience that highlighted the parallels between The Macallan’s dedication to whisky craftsmanship and Atafo’s commitment to bespoke tailoring.

Speaking at the event and expressing the details behind the simple yet intricate title “Synonymously Luxe” award-winning fashion designer and founder of ATAFO, Mai Atafo explained the concept behind the title. He described the experience as a multisensory journey designed to appeal to all the human senses of sight, touch, smell, sound, and taste.

ATAFO showcased impeccably tailored pieces modelled by elegantly posed mannequins, inviting guests to admire and interact with the craftsmanship. The smell of Clive Christian perfumes complemented the collection’s sophistication, while soundscapes curated by Bang & Olufsen set the mood. For taste, The Macallan offered its finest single malt whiskies, served in an intimate dinner setting adorned with long tables, candlelight, and ATAFO’s signature mannequins, creating a perfect finale to the experience.

Hammed Adebiyi, Senior Brand Manager for the Edrington Portfolio in Nigeria, remarked on the collaboration, “The Synonymously Luxe collection is a celebration of the mastery at ATAFO and, for The Macallan, it presents a unique opportunity to reinforce our commitment to craftsmanship and elevated experiences by investing in exceptional talents like Mai Atafo.”

For Atafo, the partnership represents a fusion of two worlds united by a shared appreciation for detail and precision. The Macallan has also partnered with ATAFO for ATAFO’s Spring/Summer ‘24 Collection – Sartorial Reverie held last year October at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos

The Macallan’s partnerships, from fashion to fine art, underline a clear mission: to celebrate craftsmanship in all its forms and foster a creative ecosystem that places Africa firmly on the global map. As the African fashion industry continues to expand, collaborations like this one with Mai Atafo illustrate the power of cross-disciplinary synergy in redefining the continent’s creative narrative.
