Why Seun Egbeegbe is not a kleptomaniac

Alhaji Olanrewaju Oluwaseun Kazeem, the movie and music promoter now notorious for being on the wrong side of the law, is not a kleptomaniac, contrary to widespread perception by many Nigerians.

The estranged lover of Nollywood star actress, Toyin Aimakhu, now accused for the second time in three months of ‘stealing’ has been labelled a kleptomaniac by many without knowing the elements of the disorder.

But serious students of mental health encomium.ng spoke with dismiss the toga.

Kleptomania, according to the online dictionary.com, is “an irresistible impulse to steal, stemming from emotional disturbance rather than economic need”.

So, the operative words are ‘irresistible impulse’.  And impulse means “the influence of a particular feeling, mental state, etc; sudden, involuntary inclination prompting to action…”

The well plotted episodes described by witnesses in the two cases of alleged nine iPhone handsets theft and trying to obtain $9,000 and £3,000 from bureau de change operators are far from kleptomania. They bear no resemblance to an impulse one can describe as irresistible.

Stealing undertaken by a kleptomaniac is never planned. And objects stolen are usually nonsensical.

A kleptomaniac, a person suffering from kleptomania, never steals because he needs the objects or money.

“What Seun Egbeegbe has been accused of, stealing nine iPhone handsets worth N2.4 million and trying to flee with N10 million in foreign currencies, are high crimes masterfully plotted,” one of the students told encomium.ng.
