World Press Photo Exhibition in Lagos

WORLD Press Photo (WPP) show case an exhibition in Freedom Park, Lagos from Friday, July 4 to Wednesday, July 23, 2014.  The organization is recognized as the world’s most prestigious contest for photojournalism and offers a rare and iconic snapshot of global issues and life around the world.
Exhibited without censorship in 50 countries all over the world, the World Press Photo exhibition offers an international showcase for all of the competition’s prize-winning entries, and is considered by many to set a standard in the field of photojournalism.
It is committed to support and advance high standards in photojournalism and documentary photography worldwide. The WPP exhibition brings together award-winning photographs from around the world, which capture the most powerful and moving images of the year. Hosting World Press Photo in Lagos provide a platform for professionals to network globally while generating wide public interest and appreciation for the work of photographers.
In collaboration with the Lagos Photo Festival which provides a platform for the development of photographic talent through mentoring, workshops, and seminars. Lagos Photo Foundation also announces the fifth edition of the annual festival in Lagos, Nigeria, themed, Staging Reality, Documenting Fiction, and the accompanying Etisalat Photo Competition, entitled, Mastering the Selfie. Lagos Photo is the first and only international arts festival of photography in Nigeria.
Staging Reality, Documenting Fiction examines contemporary photographers working in Africa who toe the line between photography and truth, by incorporating conceptual practices and performative strategies that expand traditional photographic approaches and techniques. On the fifth anniversary of Lagos Photo, the Etisalat Photography Competition which presents mastering The Selfie, photographers are asked to submit ‘selfies’ based on monthly themes leading up to the festival, exploring the community and life around you. Submitted images will be uploaded to the Lagos Photo Mobile App, powered by Etistalat, where the public can view and vote in the competition.
The project will culminate in an exhibition during the Lagos Photo Festival and the creation of an online archive, with prizes for winning photographs. Particular attention will be placed on artistic creativity and expanding the ‘selfie’ outside of established norms. The submitted work would be showcased on October 25 to November 26, 2014, at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
