Oscar Pistorious: Convicted athlete could avoid jail – experts

Despite the judge convicting Oscar Pistorious of culpable homicide in the killing of  his girlfriend -Reeva Steenkamp earlier today (September 12), experts on the South African legal system have said that the 27-year-old may avoid a jail term because he’s a first time offender.

According to South African law, the sentence for culpable homicide is at the discretion of the Judge – but it could be as much as 15 years.

However, speaking to news magazine Maclean’s,  South African lawyer, William Booth said the judge may decide to avoid sending him to jail. While South African journalist – Stephane Findlay – said: “Reporters familiar with South African courts believe Pistorious won’t go to jail, partly because he is a first time offender.”
